Annales Zoologici Fennici is an established, international, peer-reviewed journal, open to all scientists, appearing online only. It was founded in 1964 by Societas Biologica Fennica Vanamo replacing its predecessor which had been published between 1932 and 1963. Between 1978 and 1994 it was published by the Finnish Zoological Publishing Board, and since 1994 by the Finnish Zoological and Botanical Publishing Board. The journal is sponsored by the Ministry of Education and Culture.

Annales Zoologici Fennici publishes 1) original question-driven research reports focusing on all groups of wild animals in both aquatic and terrestrial environments, 2) taxonomic and systematic papers of insects and other terrestrial arthropods as handled by a subject editor, 3) zoological method descriptions, meta-analyses and invited reviews, and 4) literature-based synthesizing Zoa Essentia articles. Our aim is to promote papers with relevance to modern zoology, conservation and interplay between physiology, genetics, behaviour and ecology. In unclear cases, and to offer a review on a specific topic, please contact the journal office.

We particularly welcome manuscripts that employ tools and theory from:

  • ecology, invasion biology, conservation biology and wildlife management, including game and fisheries related works,
  • animal behaviour, evolutionary ecology and mechanistic community ecology,
  • molecular ecology, genomics and evolution, including eDNA works,
  • ecophysiology, bioenergetics and immunological ecology,
  • paleoecology, phylogeography and paleontology.

OPEN ACCESS POLICY: Papers based on research funded by Finnish institutions will be published open access free of charge in PDF format at www.annzool.net. Other papers will be published open access free of charge in EPUB format at www.annzool.net (an open access PDF option at www.annzool.net is available for a fee of 600 euros).
