Annales Zoologici Fennici is an established, international, peer-reviewed journal, open to all scientists, appearing online only. It was founded in 1964 by Societas Biologica Fennica Vanamo replacing its predecessor which had been published between 1932 and 1963. Between 1978 and 1994 it was published by the Finnish Zoological Publishing Board, and since 1994 by the Finnish Zoological and Botanical Publishing Board. The journal is sponsored by the Ministry of Education and Culture.

Annales Zoologici Fennici publishes original question-driven research reports focusing on all groups of wild animals in both aquatic and terrestrial environments, but also methodological papers, in-depth reviews and commentaries on nearly all aspects of animal ecology and evolution. Our aim is to promote papers with relevance to modern zoology, conservation and interplay between physiology, genetics, behaviour and ecology.

We discourage descriptive papers with limited geographic focus unless highly significant for conservation or high novelty value for poorly known animal groups. We do not publish faunistic notes (new occurrences of known species), papers with full focus on parasitology, ecotoxicology or community ecology, papers that focus on non-native, captive domestic animals or animals that are classified as pests or any papers that technically repeat studies with limited novelty value. In unclear cases, you may contact the journal office for enquiries prior to submission.

We welcome manuscripts that employ tools and theory from:

  • molecular ecology and evolution,
  • conservation biology, human-induced contemporary evolution and wildlife management,
  • animal behaviour and species interactions,
  • ecology and paleoecology, phylogeography and palaeontology (except systematics and taxonomy),
  • ecophysiology, bioenergetics and invasion biology.
  • bioenergetics.

Taxonomic and systematic papers of insects and other terrestrial arthropods are also welcome and handled by a subject editor.

OPEN ACCESS POLICY: Papers based on research funded by Finnish institutions will be published open access free of charge in PDF format at www.annzool.net. Other papers will be published open access free of charge in EPUB format at www.annzool.net (an open access PDF option at www.annzool.net is available for a fee of 600 euros).
