Annales Zoologici Fennici is an established international, peer-reviewed journal published by the Finnish Zoological and Botanical Publishing Board. We publish original research on animal ecology and evolution, as well as on the taxonomy and systematics of terrestrial arthropods. In-depth reviews, articles on research methodology and Zoa Essentia articles are also welcome. For more details, see our Scope.

From the beginning of 2026, new articles are published Open Access at BioOne under a Creative Commons CC BY-NC-ND license. Additionally, articles are available at www.annzool.net in EPUB or PDF format.

Contributions from all scientists are welcomed and there are no publication fees.

Forewing length variation between populations of Meloimorpha japonica

Don’t split too soon: a new study shows that east–west forewing size differences in Meloimorpha japonica don’t indicate hidden species. Molecular phylogenetics + morphology confirm it’s one cricket with a longitudinal cline rather than multiple taxa.

High moose density may protect sheep from wolf attacks. Also roe deer seems to provide a similar effect, but white-tailed deer does not. The observed pattern could relate to the habitat preferences of the animals, as both moose and wolves in Finland prefer more remote locations and avoid human settlements.
